Gallup, NM to Angel Fire, NM

Today was an interesting day. We started out in Gallup and our first stop was the Route 66 Casino. They were great! They pulled out all the stops when it came to supporting us. They had all sorts of snacks and drinks for us and even had the “Route 66 girls” there to have out picture taken with them. They were very popular. Quite a few people had there picture taken with them. Yes, even me!

One of the neatest things about this trip is all of the people that come out to support all the riders. I stopped at one of the overpasses and talked to some of the people that were there. It turns out they were all from the New Mexico National Guard. The ride goes right bast their base and they come out to the overpass every year to cheer on the riders. People like this come out all along the route. It is a really special feeling to see all the people out there cheering and waving flags. I never stop thinking about how neat that all these people are out there cheering.

We stopped at Santa Fe Harley-Davidson for lunch. They had sandwiches and chips and drinks for us. I also got my air shocks adjusted while I was there. My bike rides so much nicer. I might have to get the little air pump so that I can adjust it myself.

The last part of our ride was to Angel Fire Veterans Memorial. That place is Amazing! It it located at the top of a mountain in one of the most picturesque valleys that I have seen. A local doctor donated the land to honor Vietnam veterans. One of those Veterans was his son that died in the Vietnam War. Many of the riders that are with us served in Vietnam and were very moved by the memorial. It was a very touching moment for all.

After we were done there, Darcy Masin and I rode down to Cimmeron, NM where there was a camp site. It was $10 per person. That was the first meal or lodging that I have had to pay for on the RFTW part of my trip. They are definitely taking care of the riders!

When we got there, we found out that the local church was providing a spaghetti dinner for us. It was one of the best meals that I have had on the trip so far. I was a happy camper when I left there.

The camping accomodations were not the best, but then again, I was tired and I really didn’t care. I’ll be asleep before 9:00 again tonight.
